Artwork and Design

Artwork Design

Our design work is FREE with all orders placed. We can transform your artwork, inspiration or idea into an Enamel Pin Badge or design to decorate a custom product and we can advise you about which of the many manufacture processes we offer, is the best one for use according to your Pin badge or custom product requirement. Our team have a vast amount of experience and are able to make recommendations and transfer your artwork, logo or idea drawn on paper, into a format which will bring you the best results while taking into account the needs of the materials used in manufacture.

How should I supply my artwork to you?

Vector artwork is preferred. We can use any of the following formats: EPS, PDF, AI, CDR. We do accept Raster artwork in a variety of formats: PSD (please do not merge layers), JPEG, PNG, TIFF, BMP, PPT, DOC and this must be a minimum resolution of 300dpi (dots per inch) at 100% full size. Please do ask if you are not sure, again we can provide support for this and are here to help.

Design Tips

Work with metal and enamel in very many respects is an amazingly flexible process. It never fails to impress or bring a smile to your face. However, there are some limitations and so please do be realistic about how any very small and intricate areas within your original design will transfer to the process.

We recommend keeping your colours to 5 or below, taking care not to use very small details that will be hard to replicate exactly in metal and enamel and being realistic about the size you would like your badge to be in relation to the detail of your design. All of this helps us to do the very best job for you

The raised metal lines of Enamel Pins are created to separate the different elements of the design and contain each different enamel colour, preventing it from spreading to another area of the badge

The standard depth of metal for an enamel pin badge is 1.5mm, and starts from 2mm in thickness for 3D and Die Cast sculpted badges

While lines in raised metal can be of any weight, the smallest weight for lines in your artwork should be no less than 0.2mm. When you are creating the smallest lines for metal, please use this setting when designing your Enamel Pin for these lines and text (as appropriate)

Very small text and detail is not possible to transfer with 100% accuracy

For small spaces in your design which require an enamel fill, we recommend 0.5mm as the minimum space to produce the best results in very tight to fill areas. Anything smaller may become filled with metal during manufacture

The high level of grinding and polishing within of the Hard Enamel process can cause raised metal lines to flatten slightly so please take into account that small features, (for example but not limited to) such as the eyes, nose and mouth may view as more round or thick. Equally, small recesses that are enamel filled can be impacted in a similar way, filling over the enamel decreasing the amount in view

Enamel colours are solid, it is not possible to reproduce colour gradients, so consider solid colours when creating a design for an enamel pin badge

If gradients are important to your brand guidelines or design we recommend an Offset Print Badge or a Die Struck base with a printed insert

Commercial CMYK Print

When designing for print (Offset Print Pins, Button Badges, Heat Printed Lanyards, Printed Patches, Stickers, Backing Cards) we recommend that you work in CMYK rather than RGB.

Please ensure any font in artwork that you provide to us is outlined. This is the only way that we are able to reproduce the Font you have used in your design. Please do ask if you are not sure and again we can provide support for this, we are here to help.

Adding a bleed to your artwork

A Bleed area is needed mostly for our Button Badges and Backing Cards to make sure your artwork runs beyond the line where we will cut the product to size or shape. An additional 6mm added to the perimeter of your artwork is sufficient for this. We have templates available to support you with adding a bleed for these products. If you are ordering a product other than these which needs a bleed to your original artwork, we will let you know.

The Difference between Hard and Soft Enamel

In all Enamel Pins, raised metal outlines are created to contain each different enamel colour to prevent it from spilling into another area of the design. A Hard Enamel Pin is the Premium of Enamel Badges and has many phases within production to achieve this. The Enamel is filled to the surface of the raised metal and when the Pin is finally ground and polished at the end of the process if has a smooth feel to the touch of the surface. A Soft Enamel Pin has a single coating of enamel inserted by syringe and once baked to harden; the raised metal lines can be felt as you run your finger over the surface of the badge.

Metal Plating colours

Pin badges are coated with metal plate. We have a real variety of colours available including the ever popular Gold, Silver and Black as well as offering Antique, Dyed, Rainbow and Satin effect. Our team will provide full guidance regarding this as not all plates are available or suitable for all processes.

We can create patches of all sizes and shapes. The larger a patch is the more costly it is because of the time it takes to produce and amount of material involved per patch.

The difference between Embroidered and Woven Patches

These are the two most popular types of patches we produce. Emboidered Patches consist of a thicker thread than woven and the thread is stitched onto a base fabric so there is a raised, thicker effect to the finish. Small detail does not transfer so well with Embroidered Patches. They are popular in bringing a traditional visual and vintage feel to the artwork transformation. Woven Patches are created with thinner threads which are woven together producing a flat surface. The visual they bring is better for fine detail and text.

A ‘classic’ look and style of patch

A ‘high resolution’ style of patch

For the ultimate transfer of a gradient image or design with many colours and detail, we recommend a CMYK Full Colour Printed Patch which can be over-locked or heat-cut according to the design PVC Patches are created with a sewing channel to allow the stitching of the patch to the garment or accessory.

Printed Patch

Borders for Patches

Two styles of border are used for patches – Overlocked and Heat Cut.

Overlocking is possible in regular shapes such as squares, rectangles, ovals, circles and shields. The effect looks like this

Heat-Cut edging is used where the patch is an irregular shape and the over-locking machinery would not cope with the turns and angles of the design shape. The effect looks like this

Backing for Patches

Paper backing is popular for embroidered and woven patches and covers the threads at the back of the patch to create a clean backing appearance

Iron-On backing is a popular method of applying a patch to a garment or accessory. It is washable and can be used for many types of material. We do recommend where patches are likely to be washed regularly, that you also apply some stitching to retain the patch in place for longevity. For large patches, we recommend sewing-on for the best result.

Velcro® backing is perfect for patches that need to be applied (or transferred) instantly to uniforms, team kit and soft toys for example. We recommend when not in use that the hook and soft surfaces of the Velcro® are left in position or returned to place as soon as possible in order to prevent debris from collecting in the hooks. This is important for clothing or accessories that are washed and tumble dried regularly. Please refer to The Velcro® brand site for further details about care.

Self-adhesive is a peel and stick backing that works well for a single use and limited activity. It is possible to sew patches with self-adhesive backing after one-time use for transfer to another garment or accessory for longevity.

In this section you will find a variety of templates to support you in preparing artwork for Backing Cards and Button Badges.

Can you meet the date of our event? Can I make a rush order?

The answer is 'yes', so long as there is sufficient time to ensure the quality of the product is not compromised by unrealistic time constraints. For example, a club with an FA Cup match where the draw was confirmed on a Monday night for the match 12 days later, received their order 8 working days later ...with a day to spare, phew! The dates available and the cost for an Express Delivery are available on our Product pages. We are accurate with our Express dates. Please note, if under unforeseeable circumstances we are prevented from fulfilling this, it is covered by the Force Majeure clause in our Terms & Conditions whereby we will then deliver at the earliest possible opportunity after this date. In this circumstance the additional cost paid for Express Delivery will be refunded to you minus any reasonable costs incurred by us and not exceeding £10.00. No other refund is possible. Our Key Performance Indicators show there is a 3.92% chance of us missing the express delivery date.

Designs in enamel are constructed by raising and recessing metal to create the features of the design. This metal base is usually made from silver, gold or black nickel but can also be made in other metal plate colours and effects too. The raised metal areas of the badge act like the lead in stained glass windows in that they function as dividers for the enamel colours of the design to sit within.

What does ‘Hard Enamel’ mean? This is the most premium of Enamel Pins as the badges go through a wide range of processes during manufacture to achieve a highly durable Pin that has bright vibrant colours. Hard Enamel pins have the recesses of the metal base filled right to the surface with enamel before they are ground and polished. This means that Hard Enamel Pins have a smooth surface which is flush with the raised metal lines of the design which gives the Pin badge a highly durable and lovely smooth finish and sheen to the surface.

What does ‘Soft Enamel’ mean? These ever popular Pins which are also of superb quality, have a single layer (rather than several as with Hard) of Enamel in the recessed areas of the metal and so, they have an attractive, contoured and tactile feel if you run your finger over the surface. Soft Enamel Pins can also be coated with hard Epoxy Resin to achieve a smooth surface if required.

Yes we can. One of the most appealing features of the Hard and Soft Enamel, Die Struck (no Enamel), Offset print and PVC pin badge is that it can be created in any shape and size. There is no ‘standard’ shape or size, you have total flexibility according to the design you require. Internal cut-outs and very intricate design shaping will incur an additional charge. We will ensure that we explain all of this to you when you enquire.

The exception to this is our express Resin Dome Pins, which are constructed using components of set sizes and shapes and also our Buttons Badges and Button Keyrings…we do have a wide range of different shapes and sizes to choose from 😊

Embroidered badges and patches are made by stitching the threads of the design onto a twill, felt or chenille background. Embroidery therefore sits slightly proud of the backing material.

Woven badges and patches are used where a design is fine in detail and too fine to embroider successfully. The design is made by weaving the coloured thread into the material. The stitching in woven badges is therefore integrated to the background and flat. The weaving process is also used to construct labels for clothing and we can supply these types of labels too.

Where the artwork is too fine to be woven, badges and patches can be created using one of several printing processes which brings about an exact representation of the design.
